Beyond markets and states describes Ostrom’s journey in developing and analyzing the system of Polycentric government in metropolitan cities.

The struggle to govern the commons explains the difficulty in developing ideal conditions for governance given the critical problems of transboundary pollution, tropical deforestation and climate change; issues that require a larger scale of change and involve nonlocal influence.

The challenge of common pool resources focuses on the concept of the tragedy of the commons and the internal problem of coordination and cooperation.
